Wednesday #NegroniWeek | the ultra chic lounge area at @hakkasanindia called Ling Ling is a fluid space which tempts you to flow into a mesmeric trance with their spirited menu, easy izakaya style dining and sassy music. It’s designed to let the swish set down their guard in a space they’d probably be comfortable in. It’s ambient blue brilliance coupled with the expansive bar set up, holding some of the best spirit collection in the city usually makes me ‘not’ want to budge from the barstool. It’s nice to see the group sign in on #negroniweek2018 supporting OzHarvest, Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it directly to more than 1000 charities supporting people in need across the country. Using their signature Negroni variation (which is on the menu, in some of their global spaces too) comprising of the worlds most expensive spice ‘saffron’. I was recommended to try this by @karynabajaj the groups vivacious new head, but with a catch. No recipes! Well, parking myself at the bar gave me a full view of the going on’s and I could see myself replicating it if I wanted to. Here’s the observed version of the drink..
• Saffron Smoked Negroni •
• 30ml Turmeric Infused Gin
• 30ml Vermouth
• 30ml Campari
Stirred, original style.
Sprayed atop with a house special saffron tincture.
Smoked with hickory wood to finish.
While the saffron lifts the cocktail to familiar heights, especially when the tincture is generously yet surreptitiously sprayed into a cloud over the glass, most of it wafting towards you, the smoke is a make or break. If you like smoke in your cocktails it’s a definitely go, and yet, if it’s smoked for even a second longer it kills every nuance of balance the cocktail is renowned for. Under the expertise and deftness of the mixologist it’s important to smoke it ‘just right’. While I like the original avatar and loved the aroma of saffron enticing me to sip on it straightaway, @petpujaris savored the smoked one to its last drop: #cocktailporn #drinkforacause #smokednegroni #imbibe #imbibegram
